The sun’s shining, the kids are out of school, and you’ve got the grill fired up for you and a couple hundred of your closest friends. Summer is near! The problem is, only 20 of your 200 guests made the invite-only-super-exclusive-everybody-is-going-to-wish-they-were-here-summer-grill-out-extravaganza list. Who then are these other unwelcome guests? You guessed it: mosquitoes. In fact, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) has unveiled their 2016 parasite predictions, and these pesky invaders that carry diseases such as heartworm, West Nile, yellow fever and the Zika virus are expected to be rampant this season. Check out these five pro tips to mosquito-proof your yard and make summer great again.

1. Mind the water

Whether used for breeding or feeding, water is a must for mosquitoes. Empty containers of standing water including buckets, potted plant trays, garbage cans, old tires, etc. to eliminate stagnation. Water features such as ponds and bird baths can also be mosquito hotspots, so keep these areas well-maintained and covered when possible.

Changing seasons and heavy wind can leave tree and other plant-life debris to clog your gutters, making the perfect home for puddling water and a new mosquito family to set up camp. Consider installing gutter covers to eliminate this from your ongoing “honey-do” list!

3. Maintain your lawn

Keeping your lawn maintained not only contributes to the, “everybody-is-going-to-wish-they-were-here” factor, but it also keeps bugs away! Aerate your lawn at least once a year to improve drainage (we’re sensing a theme here), and to bring more oxygen to the soil. Prevent mosquitoes and other nasty pests by treating regularly with natural pest control.

4. Add to the landscaping

While you’re in the yard, why not add a few new blooms that are sure to brighten your day–and keep mosquitoes at bay? Marigolds, citronella and catnip are great options! Visit a local farmers market or nursery to find what grows best in your area (and support local agriculture while you’re at it!)

5. Protect the ones you love, naturally.

As if your centerpieces weren’t cool enough, kick it up a notch and add a bottle of natural pest control to each table. Wondercide Personal Insect Repellent spray is available in Fresh Cedar, Fresh Lemongrass, and Fresh Rosemary fragrances and also make the perfect party favor!

So now that your yard is ready to go, grab a pen and a notepad and get to planning the party of the summer!
