4 Must-Read Musings on Natural Sunscreen

naturalsunscreenNatural sunscreen is an important step in preventing sunburns and skin cancer. With the arrival of summer, now is a good a time as any to start choosing the safest sunscreen for your family. Many sunscreens contain harmful ingredients that put your health at risk while you’re trying to avoid doing just that!

Check out this year’s list from EWG of natural sunscreen that is both safe for your skin and strong enough to effectively protect against the sun.

Four things to know about sun protection:

1. Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Some companies market their sunscreen with things like millionSPF, when in reality the FDA says sunscreen hits its limit at 50SPF. Don’t buy into any hyperbolic claims and be sure to reapply as needed!

2. Watch the Sunscreen Ingredient List

You want to protect your skin from burns and risk of skin cancer, so make sure you’re not also applying harmful chemicals in your sunscreen. EWG has a list of dangerous ingredients and the worst sunscreens, so you and your family can steer clear!

3. Natural Skin Care

After a day at the beach or by the pool, any amount of sun exposure can take a toll on your skin. Be sure to wash up with organic soap that will soothe and moisturize your skin and spritz on some skin tonic for any needed relief!

To keep bugs at bay while you play, don’t forget Wondercide’s natural insect repellent.

Dog Sunscreen4. Dogs Need Protection, Too

Dogs can suffer skin damage from spending lots of time in the sun, especially if they are light-skinned or have any missing fur. Just like you can still get a sunburn on your head despite your hair, fur doesn’t keep UV rays away entirely. There are some pet-specific sunscreens available, but many of the natural sunscreen options outlined by EWG can be used on your pup, too – just make sure the one you choose contains NO zinc oxide, as it’s toxic to your Wonderpups. We always do a test patch before a full application on our dogs to be safe as well.

And, of course, beyond sunscreen, make sure you are protecting your pups in any buggy areas you may visit by using Flea & Tick Control for Pets + Home 😉
